Frequently Asked Questions

Forex margin is the deposit required to open and maintain a leveraged currency position. It is expressed as a percentage of the full position size. For example, 2% margin means you need $2,000 to control a $100,000 position (50:1 leverage).
The CFTC (Commodity Futures Trading Commission) limits leverage for US retail forex accounts to 50:1 for major currency pairs and 20:1 for minor and exotic pairs. These limits are designed to protect retail traders from excessive risk.
For pairs where USD is the quote currency (e.g. EUR/USD), pip value = lot size × pip size. For a standard lot (100,000), one pip = $10. For pairs where USD is the base currency, the pip value is converted at the current exchange rate.
A standard lot is 100,000 units of the base currency. A mini lot is 10,000 units, and a micro lot is 1,000 units. Smaller lot sizes allow traders to take positions with less capital and manage risk more precisely.
Most US forex brokers will issue a margin call when your margin level (equity / used margin) falls below a certain threshold. If you fail to add funds, the broker may automatically close your positions to prevent further losses. Specific policies vary by broker.
