Frequently Asked Questions

Initial margin (also called performance bond) is the deposit required to open a futures position. It is set by the exchange (CME Group) and represents a fraction of the total contract value. It is not a down payment — it is a good-faith deposit against potential losses.
Initial margin is the amount needed to open a position. Maintenance margin is the minimum amount that must remain in your account. If your account balance falls below the maintenance level, you will receive a margin call to restore the balance to the initial margin level.
If your account equity drops below the maintenance margin, your broker will issue a margin call requiring you to deposit additional funds to bring the balance back to the initial margin level. Failure to meet the call may result in the broker liquidating your position.
Many brokers offer reduced intraday (day-trade) margin rates — sometimes as low as 25-50% of the exchange overnight margin. These reduced rates apply only if the position is opened and closed within the same trading session.
Micro futures are smaller-sized versions of standard futures contracts (typically 1/10th the size). They require proportionally less margin and are designed for individual traders who want futures exposure with lower capital requirements.
