Frequently Asked Questions

Equity margin is the minimum amount of your own funds you must provide when taking a leveraged position in stocks on the Nigerian Stock Exchange. The rest is financed by the broker as a margin loan.
Margin requirements on NGX vary by stock category. Blue-chip stocks in the NGX 30 index may have lower margin requirements (e.g. 40-50%), while smaller or more volatile stocks may require higher margins (e.g. 60-70%).
A leveraged position means you are exposed to a larger stock position than your cash investment. If you have ₦500,000 and the margin is 50%, you can control ₦1,000,000 worth of shares. This amplifies both potential gains and losses.
A margin call occurs when the value of your position falls to a level where your equity percentage drops below the maintenance margin requirement. You must then deposit additional funds or reduce your position to meet the requirement.
Not all stocks are eligible for margin trading. Brokers typically offer margin trading only on qualifying stocks that meet certain liquidity and market capitalisation criteria. Check with your broker for the list of margin-eligible securities.
