Frequently Asked Questions

No. Nigeria does not have a federal inheritance tax or estate duty. The old Estate Duty Act was repealed, and most Nigerian states have also abolished state-level estate duties. However, there are still costs involved in distributing an estate — primarily probate fees, solicitor/legal fees, and administrative expenses. This calculator estimates those costs and the net estate available to beneficiaries.
Probate is the legal process of validating a will and authorising the executor to distribute the estate. In Nigeria, the probate registry charges fees based on the value of the estate. Solicitors who assist with the process also charge for their time. These costs can range from 1–5% of the gross estate value depending on complexity and the state.
Dying intestate (without a will) in Nigeria means the estate is distributed under either the Administration of Estates Law of the relevant state, customary law, or Islamic law (for Muslims), depending on the circumstances. This can result in disputes and a longer, more expensive probate process. Writing a will is strongly recommended.
Yes. All assets owned by the deceased at the time of death — including NGX shares, money market fund units, bank accounts, property, and business interests — form part of the estate. Beneficiaries should notify the relevant registrars or fund managers with the grant of probate/letters of administration to effect a transfer.
Yes, always. This calculator is for illustrative purposes only. A qualified solicitor or estate planning lawyer can help you structure your estate efficiently through wills, trusts, and beneficiary nominations to minimise costs and ensure your wishes are carried out.
