Frequently Asked Questions

Nominal returns are the raw investment gains before accounting for inflation. Real returns adjust for inflation, showing you what your money will actually be worth in today's purchasing power. If your investment grows at 14% per year but inflation is 22%, your real return is negative — you are losing purchasing power.
Compound growth means you earn returns not just on your original investment but also on all the returns you have already accumulated. Over long periods this creates an exponential "snowball" effect — the longer you stay invested, the faster your wealth grows.
Yes, especially for long-term planning. Nigerian inflation has historically run above 20% per year. Setting the inflation rate slider to a realistic estimate lets you see the real purchasing power of your future wealth, which is far more useful than the nominal figure alone.
This depends on your investment mix. Nigerian money market funds have historically returned 10–18% per annum. Equities (NGX) have averaged higher over the long term but with more volatility. Treasury bills typically track the CBN Monetary Policy Rate. Always use conservative estimates for planning purposes.
Monthly contributions are assumed to be made at the start of each month and immediately begin earning compound interest. The formula combines the future value of the initial lump sum with the future value of an annuity-due.
