Why You Might Need to Transfer Nigerian Shares Between Brokers

Ready to start investing in Nigerian stocks? Shares Saver registers your shares directly in your own name through SEC-regulated brokers.

Common reasons Nigerian investors transfer their shares to a new broker include: their current broker has poor service, high fees, or is not providing adequate support; the broker's trading platform is outdated; the broker has had regulatory issues; the investor wants to consolidate all holdings with one platform; or the investor is switching from a traditional broker to a digital investment platform.

The Role of CSCS in Nigerian Share Transfers

The Central Securities Clearing System (CSCS) is the central depository for all NGX-listed shares. Your shares are held in your CSCS account under your CHN (Central Holder Number). When you "transfer shares between brokers", you are not moving the shares themselves — they stay in your CSCS account. What changes is the broker linked to your CSCS account. The new broker is registered as the controlling broker and gains the ability to execute trades on your behalf.

Documents Typically Required

Ready to start investing in Nigerian stocks? Shares Saver registers your shares directly in your own name through SEC-regulated brokers.

The specific documents depend on the brokers involved. Typical requirements: valid government-issued ID; your CHN (Central Holder Number) — available from your current broker or through the e-CSCS portal; a completed transfer instruction form from your current broker; and an account opening or broker change form from your new broker. Some brokers require additional documentation. Confirm with both your old and new broker before starting.

How to Instruct Your Current Broker to Release Your Shares

Contact your current broker in writing (email or physical letter) with a clear instruction to release your CSCS account for transfer to a new broker. Provide your CHN and the name of your new broker. The broker should provide you with a transfer out form or acknowledgement. Keep records of all communications.

How to Register Your New Broker to Receive the Shares

Complete the account opening process with your new broker, including KYC verification. Once your new account is open, the new broker submits the broker change request to the CSCS. The CSCS processes the re-assignment, linking your CHN to the new broker. Your shares remain in your CSCS account throughout — no physical movement of securities occurs.

Typical Transfer Timelines

CSCS broker re-assignments typically process within a few business days to two weeks, depending on the speed of both brokers in submitting the required forms and the CSCS processing queue. Delays are common if documentation is incomplete. Follow up with both brokers proactively.

What Happens to Dividend Entitlements During a Transfer?

Dividend entitlements are based on your CSCS registration, not your broker. Since your shares remain registered in your CSCS account throughout the transfer, your dividend entitlements are unaffected. Any dividends declared and paid during the transfer period will be processed normally to your registered bank account.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my broker refuse to release my shares?

A broker should not refuse a legitimate transfer instruction from a registered shareholder. If your broker is unresponsive or refuses, escalate to SEC Nigeria's investor complaints process.

Do I need to sell my shares to change brokers?

No — if your shares are registered in your own CSCS account. You change the broker linked to your CSCS account, not the shares themselves. Only sell if your shares are in a nominee account and the platform will not transfer them out in specie.

Is there a fee to transfer between brokers?

Fees vary. Some brokers charge an administrative fee for outgoing transfers; others do not. The CSCS may also charge a processing fee. Confirm all applicable fees with both brokers before initiating the transfer.
