BVN Name or Date of Birth Wrong? Why It Matters for Your Shares and How to Fix It
A name or date of birth on your BVN that does not match your other records can hold up a CSCS account, a dividend mandate or an unclaimed dividend claim. How to check the details on your BVN and how corrections work.
If the name or date of birth on your BVN is wrong, or does not match your NIN, bank account and share records, identity checks for shares and dividends can fail. You can see the details in your bank app or at a branch, and corrections are made through your bank with documents that support the change.

Why the Details Have to Match
Every step of owning Nigerian shares checks your identity against your BVN: opening a CSCS account, setting up an e-dividend mandate with a registrar, and claiming unclaimed dividends. If the name on your share certificate or registrar record is spelled differently from your BVN, or your date of birth differs between your BVN and NIN, the check can be rejected until the records agree.
- A married name on one record and a maiden name on another.
- A middle name present on the BVN but missing on the share register.
- Initials on old share certificates, full names on the BVN.
- A date of birth entered wrongly when the BVN was enrolled.
How to Check the Name and Date of Birth on Your BVN
Your bank app usually shows the name on your BVN record, and any branch can print or show your BVN details once you prove who you are. Compare them with your NIN slip, your bank account name and, if you already hold shares, your registrar statement or CSCS statement.

How to Check Shares in Your Name OnlineHow BVN Corrections Work
Corrections are requested through a bank where you hold an account. The bank asks for documents that support the change and submits it to NIBSS. What is accepted depends on the change; ask your bank for its current list before you go.
- Name change after marriage: typically a marriage certificate and valid ID in the new name.
- Spelling or order of names: valid ID and, often, a sworn affidavit.
- Date of birth: a document showing the correct date, such as a birth certificate or passport.
Fixing the BVN is only half of it. Your registrar and broker records may also need updating to the same name before dividends and share transfers go through smoothly.
Bring your registrar record into line with your BVN.
Update Your Details With a RegistrarUnclaimed Dividends and Name Mismatches
Many unclaimed dividends in Nigeria are tied to old share accounts in slightly different names. Proving that the shares are yours often starts with showing that your BVN, NIN and the name on the register refer to the same person.
