How to Invest in Nigerian Stocks from Spain
Nigerian citizens living in Spain can hold NGX-listed shares directly in their own name. This guide sets out the Nigerian identity requirements, how euro reaches a naira account, the Certificate of Capital Importation, dividends, Agencia Tributaria reporting in general terms and NGX hours on the mainland and in the Canary Islands.
Nigerian citizens living in Spain can own shares listed on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) directly, without returning to Nigeria to set it up. The shares are bought by a licensed Nigerian stockbroker, held in a Central Securities Clearing System (CSCS) account in your name and paid for in naira from a Nigerian bank account. As a Spanish tax resident you would generally also have the holding and its income in view of the Agencia Tributaria.

Can Residents of Spain Own NGX-Listed Shares?
A Nigerian citizen in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Málaga or Las Palmas can be the registered owner of NGX-listed shares. Nigerian law does not tie share ownership to residence in Nigeria. Whether you hold a Spanish residence card, long-term residence or Spanish nationality alongside your Nigerian one makes no difference to the Nigerian process, as long as you have the Nigerian identity details a broker must collect.
Spanish nationals and other non-Nigerians are not barred from the Nigerian market, but the retail route is closed to them in practice. A retail broker account rests on the Bank Verification Number (BVN), and a BVN is issued only against Nigerian identity documents. Foreign investors usually appoint a custodian bank, a structure suited to institutions and larger sums. Shares Saver is currently available to Nigerian citizens only.
Identity and Accounts: A Checklist
- BVN, which you already have if you have ever held a Nigerian bank account. Your bank can confirm the number.
- If you have no BVN, a Non-Resident BVN. Nigerian passport holders living abroad apply online through NIBSS at https://nibss-plc.com.ng/nrbvn/; the portal shows the current requirements and fee.
- NIN, issued by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC). Options for enrolling outside Nigeria are published on nimc.gov.ng.
- A Nigerian bank account in your own name.
- A valid Nigerian passport and recent proof of your Spanish address.
- A CSCS account with a Clearing House Number (CHN), opened for you by the stockbroker once verification is complete.
A Spanish NIE and a Cl@ve login identify you to the Spanish authorities and have no role in the Nigerian checks. What causes delays is a mismatch between Nigerian records, so confirm that your BVN, NIN, bank account and passport show the same name in the same order.
Funding: How Euro Becomes Naira
Ready to start investing in Nigerian stocks? Shares Saver registers your shares directly in your own name through SEC-regulated brokers.
A Spanish bank account cannot be used to fund a Shares Saver account. Funding is done in naira from your Nigerian bank account, and NGX prices are quoted in naira. Bizum and SEPA transfers are European payment methods and do not reach a Nigerian bank. The general options are an international transfer from your Spanish bank, a licensed remittance service that pays out in naira to a Nigerian bank account, or a transfer into a euro domiciliary account at a Nigerian bank that you convert later.
Fees, delivery times and the euro-to-naira rate vary between providers and change often. Compare the full cost at the time of sending and use providers that are licensed to operate in Spain. Keep each confirmation, because the euro amount you sent is part of your own record of what the shares cost.
Certificate of Capital Importation
A Certificate of Capital Importation (CCI) is issued by a Nigerian bank as evidence that foreign currency entered Nigeria for investment. It exists so that the investor can later use the official foreign exchange market to repatriate dividends and sale proceeds in foreign currency.
The certificate is tied to the inflow it records and is arranged with the receiving bank when the euro arrives. Naira paid out by a remittance service does not normally come with one. Whether to arrange it depends on your plans, not on the rules for owning shares: it is relevant if you want a documented way to bring capital back to Spain and less relevant if the money will stay in Nigeria. Your Nigerian bank can explain the steps.
Dividends in Naira, After Withholding Tax
Nigerian companies pay dividends in naira through the e-dividend system. Payment goes to the Nigerian bank account on your mandate after 10% Nigerian withholding tax has been deducted. Dividends are not paid into Spanish accounts. If you move the money to Spain, the amount in euro depends on the exchange rate that day, which goes up and down over time.
Spanish Tax: General Position
People who are tax resident in Spain are normally taxed on their worldwide income, which covers dividends and gains from shares held abroad. That income belongs in the annual income tax return filed with the Agencia Tributaria. Spain also has an informative declaration of assets held abroad, known as Modelo 720, which applies above thresholds set by the Spanish authorities.
The draft return prepared by the Agencia Tributaria is based on Spanish sources, so do not assume it includes a holding in a Nigerian CSCS account. Check the current Modelo 720 thresholds, what to declare and how Nigerian withholding tax is treated with the Agencia Tributaria or a qualified asesor fiscal.
On the Nigerian side, share disposals are exempt under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 where proceeds are below ₦150 million and gains do not exceed ₦10 million in any 12 months, or where the proceeds are reinvested in shares of Nigerian companies.
NGX Hours in Spanish Time
The NGX trades from 9:00 to 16:00 West Africa Time (WAT), Monday to Friday. WAT is UTC+1 and Nigeria does not change its clocks. Mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands are on Central European Time (UTC+1) in winter, so the session runs from 9:00 to 16:00 local time. During Central European Summer Time (UTC+2), from the last Sunday of March to the last Sunday of October, Spain is one hour ahead and the session runs from 10:00 to 17:00.
The Canary Islands are one hour behind the mainland all year. There the session runs from 8:00 to 15:00 in winter and from 9:00 to 16:00 in summer. Trades settle on T+1, one business day after the trade date.
Ownership in Your Own Name
Through Shares Saver, purchases are carried out by Crown Capital Limited, which holds an NGX trading licence, and the shares are registered in your legal name in the CSCS under your CHN. You are not buying units in a fund or a claim on a platform balance. The company registrar records you as the shareholder, and that record continues if you change broker or leave Spain.

Investing from SpainFrequently Asked Questions
Can I pay for Nigerian shares with Bizum or a SEPA transfer?
Neither reaches Nigeria. Both are European payment methods, and the investment account is funded in naira from a Nigerian bank account. Euro has to be sent to that account first by international transfer, remittance service or domiciliary account.
Do Nigerian shares have to be declared in Spain?
Spanish tax residents are normally taxed on a worldwide basis, so foreign dividends and gains are generally part of the annual return, and assets abroad above set thresholds fall under the Modelo 720 declaration. Confirm the current rules with the Agencia Tributaria or an asesor fiscal.
Is the NGX open at the same time in Madrid and in the Canary Islands?
No, the Canaries are an hour behind. In Madrid the session is 9:00 to 16:00 in winter and 10:00 to 17:00 in summer. In the Canary Islands it is 8:00 to 15:00 in winter and 9:00 to 16:00 in summer.
Can a Spanish national without a Nigerian passport open a retail account?
Not in practice, since a BVN is needed and it is issued only against Nigerian identity documents. Foreign nationals usually invest through a custodian bank with a Certificate of Capital Importation. Shares Saver accepts Nigerian citizens only at present.
Are dividends paid in euro or in naira?
In naira, into the Nigerian bank account on your e-dividend mandate, after 10% withholding tax. Converting to euro is a separate transfer that you arrange through your Nigerian bank.
How do I prove to a Spanish adviser what I own in Nigeria?
Your holdings are recorded in the CSCS under your CHN and shown in the Shares Saver app. The broker issues a contract note for each purchase and sale, and dividend payments appear on your Nigerian bank statement. Those are the documents an adviser will normally ask for.
