How to Buy MTN Nigeria Shares Online: Step-by-Step Guide
MTN Nigeria shares trade on the Nigerian Exchange under the ticker MTNN. This guide walks through the account, CSCS, funding, order and settlement steps for buying them online in your own name.
MTN Nigeria shares are bought on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) under the ticker MTNN, through a SEC-registered stockbroker or an investment platform that routes orders to one. You cannot buy them at an MTN shop, with airtime, or through a MoMo wallet. The whole process can be done online: open and verify an account, get a CSCS account and Clearing House Number (CHN), fund in naira, place the order, and check the holding after T+1 settlement.

What Is MTN Nigeria and Is It Listed on the NGX?
MTN Nigeria Communications Plc is a mobile network operator providing voice calls, mobile data, SMS and digital services, and it operates the MTN MoMo mobile money service. It is listed on the NGX under the symbol MTNN and is classified in the Telecommunications sector. It is a subsidiary of MTN Group, a South African company listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.
An order for MTNN on the NGX buys shares in the Nigerian company only. It does not buy shares in MTN Group. Our separate MTN Nigeria shares overview covers the company background and the questions investors commonly research; this article stays with the mechanics of the purchase.
What You Need Before You Buy MTN Nigeria Shares
- A valid government-issued ID, your Bank Verification Number (BVN) and proof of address for identity checks
- An account with a SEC-registered stockbroker, or with an investment platform that works with one
- A CSCS account and CHN in your own name. The Central Securities Clearing System (CSCS) is the depository where NGX shares are recorded; your broker normally opens the account for you
- A Nigerian bank account in the same name, for funding and for dividend payments
- Cleared naira funds covering the shares plus transaction charges
How to Buy MTN Nigeria Shares: Step by Step
Ready to start investing in Nigerian stocks? Shares Saver registers your shares directly in your own name through SEC-regulated brokers.
Step 1: Open and verify an account
Register with a SEC-registered stockbroker or a platform connected to one and complete identity verification. Shares Saver works with Crown Capital Limited, an NGX trading licence holder, and shares bought through it are registered in the investor's own name in the CSCS.
Step 2: Confirm your CSCS account and CHN
Ask for your CHN once the CSCS account is open and keep it somewhere secure. If you already have a CHN from an earlier purchase, tell the broker so that a second one is not created in error.
Step 3: Fund the account in naira
Transfer money from a bank account in your own name, using only the payment details shown inside your verified account. Ask for the full cost breakdown before you transfer so the amount covers the charges as well as the shares.
Step 4: Find MTNN and choose an order type
Search by the ticker MTNN rather than by typing "MTN", and confirm the name shown is MTN Nigeria Communications Plc. A market order executes at the prevailing price. A limit order sets the highest price you are willing to pay and may not execute if the market does not reach it. The NGX trades from 9:00 to 16:00 WAT on business days; an order sent outside those hours waits for the next session.
Step 5: Keep the contract note and wait for settlement
After execution the broker issues a contract note showing the number of shares, the price and every charge. NGX trades settle on T+1, which means the shares are credited to your CSCS account one business day after the trade date.
Step 6: Check the holding and set up your dividend mandate
Confirm that MTNN appears against your name and CHN, either in your platform portfolio or through CSCS. Then complete an e-dividend mandate so that any dividend is paid straight to your bank account.
Costs and Fees to Expect
A purchase carries the broker's commission plus statutory and market charges, which include fees payable to the SEC, the NGX and the CSCS, and stamp duty where it applies. Some platforms also charge a subscription or service fee. Rates differ between providers and can change, so read the provider's fee schedule and compare it with the contract note after the trade. Charges also apply when shares are sold.
MTN Nigeria Dividends and the Registrar
MTN Nigeria has historically paid both interim and final dividends, subject to board approval and distributable profit. Past payments do not mean future dividends will be paid. When a dividend is declared, the announcement on the NGX gives the amount, the qualification date and the payment date. Dividends on Nigerian shares carry 10% withholding tax, deducted before payment.
The company's registrar keeps the register of shareholders and pays dividends. The registrar's name is shown on the NGX company page for MTNN and in the annual report. Your e-dividend mandate, and any later change of bank account or address, goes to that registrar.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I buy MTN shares with airtime or from my MoMo wallet?
MTNN shares are securities traded on the NGX, so an order has to go through a SEC-registered stockbroker and be paid for in naira from your investment account. Airtime cannot be used. If a provider accepts wallet transfers as a funding method, that is a payment route into your broker account, not a purchase from MTN itself.
Is the ticker MTN or MTNN?
On the Nigerian Exchange the ticker is MTNN. MTN Group, the parent company, is listed separately in Johannesburg, and an NGX order does not buy its shares.
How many MTN Nigeria shares do I have to buy?
The NGX records whole shares, so the smallest holding is one share. In practice the minimum depends on the current share price and on any minimum order value your broker or platform sets. Check the live price on the NGX or in your trading account before funding.
How long before the shares show in my CSCS account?
Settlement on the NGX is T+1. A trade executed on Monday is credited on Tuesday, provided both are business days. If the holding has not appeared after that, ask your broker for the contract note and the settlement status.
Can I buy MTN Nigeria shares from abroad?
Nigerians abroad and foreign investors can buy NGX shares through a Nigerian broker or platform that supports remote onboarding. The identity requirements still apply. Anyone bringing foreign currency into Nigeria to invest should ask their bank about a Certificate of Capital Importation, which documents the inflow for later repatriation.
Will MTN Nigeria send me a share certificate?
Shares bought on the NGX are held electronically in the CSCS rather than on paper. Your evidence of ownership is the contract note, your CSCS statement under your CHN, and your entry on the register kept by the company's registrar.
