Frequently Asked Questions

The inflation-adjusted (or "real") return is the nominal return minus the effect of inflation. It represents the actual increase in purchasing power of your money. If your investment grows by 14% but inflation is 15%, your real return is approximately -1%.
Inflation reduces the purchasing power of money over time. If prices rise faster than your savings grow, the goods and services you can buy with your savings actually decrease, even though the nominal balance is higher.
Nigeria's inflation rate has fluctuated significantly, reaching levels between 10% and 35% in recent years. The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) publishes monthly Consumer Price Index (CPI) data. Historical averages may not predict future inflation.
Nominal return is the raw percentage gain on your investment before considering inflation. Real return adjusts for inflation to show the actual change in purchasing power. For example, a 15% nominal return with 12% inflation yields approximately a 2.7% real return.
Several asset classes have historically provided some degree of inflation protection, including equities, real estate, inflation-linked bonds, and commodities. However, all investments carry risk and past performance does not guarantee future results. This calculator does not provide investment advice.
