Buy Nigerian Shares from Switzerland

Nigerian citizens living in Switzerland — in Zurich, Geneva, Basel, Bern or anywhere across the country — can buy and own NGX-listed shares directly in their own name through Shares Saver. A valid BVN and Nigerian bank account are required.

How It Works

Who can invest — eligibility requirements

🇳🇬Nigerian citizens only

Only Nigerian citizens are currently eligible to invest through Shares Saver.

🏦BVN required

A valid BVN (Bank Verification Number) is required to open an account and invest.

💳Nigerian bank account required

Swiss bank accounts (CHF) cannot be used for funding. A Nigerian bank account is required.

Nigerians in Switzerland investing in Nigerian stocks

Switzerland — particularly Zurich and Geneva — has a significant Nigerian professional community, including people in international finance, healthcare, technology, and UN/international organisations. Many Nigerians in Switzerland maintain strong ties to family and business interests in Nigeria. Shares Saver offers a formal, regulated route to build a direct financial stake in Nigerian companies.

Funding from Switzerland: use your Nigerian bank account

Swiss bank accounts (CHF) cannot be used to fund Shares Saver directly. You will need your Nigerian bank account. Use a remittance service to convert CHF to naira and transfer to your Nigerian account, then fund from there.

Swiss tax considerations

Switzerland taxes residents on worldwide wealth and income at both cantonal and federal levels. Foreign shares must typically be declared in your annual Steuererklärung. Dividends from Nigerian companies may also be taxable in Switzerland. As Switzerland is not an EU member, its tax rules differ from EU countries. Consult a Swiss Treuhänder or tax adviser before investing.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy Nigerian shares while living in Switzerland?

Yes — but only Nigerian citizens are currently eligible. If you are a Nigerian citizen living in Switzerland, you can buy shares listed on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) through Shares Saver, provided you have a valid BVN and an active Nigerian bank account.

Is a BVN required to invest from Switzerland?

Yes. A BVN (Bank Verification Number) is required. Your BVN links your identity to Nigeria's banking system and must be provided during onboarding.

Do I need a Nigerian bank account to invest from Switzerland?

Yes. A Nigerian bank account is required. Swiss bank accounts (CHF) cannot be used to fund your Shares Saver account. Many Nigerians in Switzerland use remittance services to transfer CHF or EUR to their Nigerian naira account first.

Are there Swiss tax obligations on Nigerian share investments?

Shares Saver does not provide tax advice. Switzerland taxes residents on worldwide assets and income via cantonal and federal tax authorities. Foreign shares must typically be declared in your annual tax return (Steuererklärung). Dividends from Nigeria may also be taxable in Switzerland. Consult a Swiss Treuhänder or tax adviser before investing.

Are my shares registered in my name even though I live in Switzerland?

Yes. Shares are registered in your legal name with the relevant Nigerian registrar — regardless of your Swiss residency. Your ownership record is independent of the Shares Saver platform.
