Buy Nigerian Shares from America

Nigerian citizens living across the United States — in New York, Houston, Atlanta, Washington DC, or anywhere in America — can buy and own NGX-listed shares directly in their own name through Shares Saver. A valid BVN and Nigerian bank account are required.

How It Works

Who can invest — eligibility requirements

🇳🇬Nigerian citizens only

Shares Saver is currently only available to Nigerian citizens. Non-Nigerians cannot invest at this time, regardless of where they live.

🏦BVN required

A valid BVN (Bank Verification Number) is required to open an account and invest. Your BVN links your identity to Nigeria's banking system.

💳Nigerian bank account required

You must fund your account through a Nigerian bank account. American bank accounts cannot be used for funding.

Why Nigerians in America invest in Nigerian stocks

The United States is home to one of the world's largest and most economically active Nigerian diaspora communities — from medical professionals in Houston and engineers in Silicon Valley to entrepreneurs in Atlanta and finance professionals in New York. Many maintain strong ties to Nigeria and want to build a formal financial stake in the country's growth.

Funding from America: use your Nigerian bank account

American bank accounts cannot be used to fund your Shares Saver account directly. You will need to transfer funds from your Nigerian bank account. Many Nigerians in the United States use remittance services (such as ACE Money Transfer, Wise, or others) to move USD to their Nigerian naira account, then fund their Shares Saver account from there.

USD to Nigerian Naira exchange

Nigerian shares are priced in Naira (₦) on the NGX. Exchange rates between USD and NGN fluctuate and can affect the Naira value of your investment. Plan for currency movement as part of your investment strategy.

Identity verification (KYC) from America

You will need to complete KYC (Know Your Customer) verification within the Shares Saver app. A valid Nigerian international passport is the most commonly used ID. The process is completed digitally — you do not need to be in Nigeria.

US tax considerations

The United States taxes citizens and residents on worldwide income. Holding Nigerian shares and receiving dividends may create IRS reporting obligations — including FBAR and FATCA-related disclosures depending on the value of your holdings. Consult a US-qualified CPA or tax adviser before investing.

Your shares are in your name regardless of where you live

Your shares are registered in your own legal name with the relevant Nigerian registrar. This ownership record is separate from the Shares Saver platform and is not affected by your residence in America.

Important disclaimer

This page is for educational purposes only. It does not constitute investment advice, tax advice, or legal advice. The value of shares can fall as well as rise. Shares Saver does not provide tax guidance — consult a qualified adviser in the United States before investing.

Frequently asked questions

Can Nigerians living in America buy shares on the Nigerian Stock Exchange?

Yes — but only Nigerian citizens are currently eligible. If you are a Nigerian citizen living in the United States of America, you can buy shares listed on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) through Shares Saver, provided you have a valid BVN and an active Nigerian bank account.

Is a BVN required to invest from America?

Yes. A BVN (Bank Verification Number) is required to invest through Shares Saver. Your BVN links your identity to Nigeria's banking system and is needed to satisfy KYC requirements. If you do not yet have a BVN, you will need to obtain one before you can invest.

Do I need a Nigerian bank account to invest from America?

Yes. A Nigerian bank account is required. Shares Saver does not accept foreign (American) bank accounts for funding. You will need to fund your account through your Nigerian bank account. Many Nigerians in America transfer money to Nigeria via remittance services first.

Can non-Nigerians or dual citizens invest through Shares Saver from America?

Currently, Shares Saver is only available to Nigerian citizens. If you hold dual citizenship (Nigerian and American), you are eligible as long as you have a valid BVN and a Nigerian bank account.

Will I have US tax obligations on Nigerian share investments?

Shares Saver does not provide tax advice. US residents and citizens are taxed on worldwide income by the IRS. Holding Nigerian shares and receiving dividends may trigger FBAR or FATCA reporting obligations depending on your situation. Consult a US-qualified tax adviser before investing.

Are my shares registered in my name even though I live in America?

Yes. Shares purchased through Shares Saver are registered with the relevant Nigerian registrar in your legal name — regardless of your country of residence. Living in the United States does not affect your registered ownership in Nigeria.
